Union
Cab, R.I.P. Union Cab spare #2482 is banned
from the airport after it and another spare were caught simultaneously
using the same medallion. A metal medallion was in one cab while a temporary
medallion was in the other. UTW Chair Thomas George-Williams captured
the incident on a video which was used as evidence for revocation of
Union’s color scheme permit.
Union Cab’s Permit Revoked for Numerous Violations
The Taxi Commission revoked Union Cab’s color scheme permit on
June 12 owing to numerous violations of taxi ordinances and regulations.
The company is now out of business.
Among the charges against Union were failure to have liability and workers’
compensation insurance and numerous equipment, record-keeping, and reporting
violations, including fraudulent reporting. Cabs were found operating
without license plates, registration cards or license tabs, and in unsafe
condition.
In at one instance, the company was filmed at the airport operating
two cabs under the same medallion, one of them under a temporary medallion.
Union was also charged with using its medallions in spare cabs of another
company, Yellow Cab. The investigation by commission staff and the Taxi
Detail uncovered a number of other questionable dealings between Union
and Yellow. Yellow has denied any wrongdoing in its relationship with
Union.
The investigation found that many of Union’s vehicles lacked dispatch
capability. In last winter’s dispatch survey, Union had the worst
performance of any dispatch service. Of 46 calls placed to the company,
only two cabs arrived.
Union was operating over 20 medallions earlier this year, but permit
holders started to leave when some of the company’s problems became
apparent. Many drivers and medallion holders complained of fraudulent
practices by the company manager, Me Quang Truong.
After Union’s permit was revoked, the commission expedited the
placing of its medallions into other companies.
