Supervisor Daly Proposes Ballot Measure to Preserve Prop K

Supervisor Chris Daly is sponsoring a proposed ballot measure that would place the basic principles of Proposition K of 1978 into the City Charter, where they would be safe from the designs of the MTA. As soon as the MTA took over taxi regulation in March, the agency's staff proposed medallion sales as a means of raising $15 million from the industry. (See accompanying article.) The MTA Board approved the money as part of its budget for the coming year, without any discussion of a plan for the sale of medallions, or whether the idea had any merit at all. The proposed Charter mendment contains the essential features of Prop K. It would require the MTA to provide prompt, courteous, honest and adequate service to the public, and ensure that medallions remain non-transferable city property that ...

If You've Lost Time or Money On the SmartCard, Let Us Know

By Dave Schneider

Ever lost time and money due to playing the ole SFO SmartCard jam-roulette where you have to park the cab, lose your place in line, trudge some significant distance to the office, cross your fingers and hope that you can get the card unblocked before your next birthday?

Let us know if it's happened to you. Give us a call at 415-864-8294. Leave a message with your name and contact information. Specifically, let us know if you've experienced a machine jam, refund problem or other related issues.

Any solutions?

For starters — and perhaps a no-brainer — as a logical on-site solution to jamming gates, what do you think about moving the SmartCard manager into one of the three empty cashier booths adjacent to the scanners at the entrance to the final parking lot, so problems can be remedied without that time-consuming and money-losing long walk to the sometimes-occupied office?

Note: some preliminary feedback from SFO seems to put the responsibility all on the driver. They say to wait patiently until the gate is down and the cab in front has cleared. But does that work all the time and also solve possible refund problems?

The airport also says it may make the steps down to the ATM- type SmartCard machines more accessible for people with disabilities.

Taxi Fees to Go Up
Under MTA Budget

Lost in the clamor over the MTA's plans to sell taxi medallions to the tune of $15 million was another $2.8 million in budgeted permit fees — a $600,000 increase over the amount previously budgeted. for the coming year.

Below is a comparison of some current charges and the fees that will be in effect during the July 2009-June 2010 fiscal year. (The actual fees are higher than the listed amount because of city surcharges):

Revised Rules & Regs Go into Effect June 19

Following its takeover of industry regulation from the Taxi Commission, the MTA has approved revised rules for drivers, medallion holders and cab companies. The MTA's Board of Directors approved the rules on May 19, with an effective date of June 19.

Among the rules (some old and some new) are ...

Fish Gobble Fish

Several cab companies have changed hands in recent weeks, marking the biggest industry consolidation in memory.

Black & White Checker has purchased Arrow Cab. Town Taxi bought United Cab. And Royal Cab now owns Citywide Dispatch and its associated color scheme, Big Dog City Cab. As of early June, rumors about the possible sale of National Cab remained unconfirmed.

Drivers at Arrow have been hard-hit because the company has lost a number of cabs. Eleven Arrow medallions moved to Royal Cab before the sale to Black & White Checker, and other medallion holders have left since.
