Murdered Driver Was Changing Shifts

Yellow driver Musharaf Poswal was leaving his cab for the day driver along the Richmond-El Cerrito border in the early morning of Oct. 15 when he was shot and killed in what police believe was a robbery attempt.
The murder occurred just after 4 a.m. at Bayview and San Pablo avenues in Richmond, within sight of the El Cerrito police station.
Poswal, 48, a native of Pakistan, came to the U.S. in 1980, and had been driving a cab about a year. A resident of Rodeo, he previously worked for Albertson's supermarket as a clerk and supervisor until a bad back forced him to quit.
Poswal had a long-term lease at Yellow Cab. He worked the night shift and would drive the cab back to the East Bay to turn it over to the day driver. The night of the murder, he pulled the cab up in front of his pickup truck and got into the truck. He was shot multiple times through the truck window. The cab door was found open with his cell phone inside. The day driver had not yet arrived at the time the crime took place.
Taxi regulations require shift changes to take place at the cab garage, but the rule is widely flouted. Since the murder, the Taxi Commission has advised cab companies that the shift change rule will be enforced.
Poswal left a wife, Khalida, and four sons, including two under 10 years old. He had four brothers, one of whom, Maqbool Ahmed, lives in Fremont.
As of Nov. 5, the murder was still unsolved.
